Nashville Theaterworks is announcing auditions for SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN.

Auditions will be held on Sunday July 26 at 2pm, with callbacks Monday July 27th, 7:00 pm at the theater.

Join Pastor Oglethorpe of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, as he welcomes the singing Sanders family for a night of old-fashioned gospel music, inspiring (and hilarious) stories and heart-warming fellowship. Audience members are the congregation for the evening’s service of beloved songs such as Amazing Grace and I’ll Fly Away, as well as lesser known numbers, including Christian Cowboy and I’ll Never Die (I’ll Just Change My Address).

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN will be performed at Nashville Theaterworks located at Lebanon Road.

Mervin Oglethorpe - The Young & Enthusiastic Pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, late 20s

The Sanders Family - A family of traveling gospel singers in their 1st night back on the Gospel Circuit in 5 years:

Burl Sanders - Father, late 40s- Must Play Guitar
Vera Sanders - Mother, mid 40s -Must Play Piano/Guitar
Stanley Sanders - Uncle - late 40s
June - Sister - 23 we may cast older as Aunt June
Denise Sanders - twins, 17
Dennis Sanders- twins, 17

SMOKE ON THE MOUNTAIN uses 27 standard bluegrass /gospel songs. The actors who play the Sanders Family must be able to sing and play these songs - they are the only musicians in the production. Piano, guitar and string bass are used in most songs - banjo, fiddle, autoharp, ukulele and harmonica are instruments that can be added depending on the actors’ skills. The actress playing June plays hand-held percussion instruments.

All those auditioning will be taught the melody and/or harmony lines to a gospel song. One prepared audition piece is required. If you play any of the above instruments, please prepare a short selection in the bluegrass/gospel style for your audition. We will have each all who audition to read from the script. There will be no dance audition.
